The Right Time to Replace
It's vital to monitor your tires regularly and be proactive about replacing them when necessary to ensure safe driving conditions. More than just low tread there are many other factors that can effect the handling and safety of your travels. There are 4 major factors to consider before you take your next drive.
Factors to Consider
Tread Depth
Tires have built-in tread wear indicators (usually raised bars) that become visible as the tread wears down. Tires are considered legally worn out when the tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch in any groove.
Tire Age
Over time rubber compounds in tires can harden and crack, compromising performance and safety.
Conditions
Aggressive driving, frequent towing, driving on rough roads, or exposure to extreme temperatures can accelerate tire wear and necessitate more frequent replacements.

Visible Signs
Signs of Wear or Damage, inspect tires regularly for any visible signs of wear, damage, or irregularities.
The Penny Test
The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends replacing tires when they reach 2/32”. Many states even legally require tires to be replaced at this depth.
The penny test is help you to check whether you’ve hit the 2/32” threshold. Here’s how it works:
-
Place a penny between the tread ribs on your tire.
-
Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head points down into the tread.
-
Check if the top of his head disappears between the ribs. If it does, your tread is still above 2/32”. If you see his entire head, it may be time to replace because your tread is no longer deep enough.

When performing the penny tire test, remember not only to check all tires, but check different places around each tire. Even if parts of your tread are deeper than 2/32”, you should still replace the tire when any areas fail the penny test.
